Abstract

Landscape ecology is a widely influential approach to looking at ecological junction at the scale of landscapes, and accepting that human beings powerfully affect landscape pattern and function. It goes beyond investigation of pristine environments to consider ecological questions that are raised by patterns of farming, forestry, towns and cities.Placing Nature is a groundbreaking volume in the field of landscape ecology, the result of collaborative work among experts in ecology, philosophy, art, literature, geography, landscape architecture and history. Contributors consider the goals and strategies needed to bring human-dominated landscapes into intentional relationships with nature, articulating widely varied approaches to the task. Placing Nature provides important insight for those who make such choices – ecologists, ecosystem managers, watershed managers, conservation biologists, land developers, designers, planners – and for all who wish to promote the ecological health of their communities.

Abstract

This clear book on the practical application of theories of landscape and planning presents a collection of essays, arranged thematically, in which the author takes a critical look at new approaches to current problems in both landscape/environmental design and urban planning. He shows how design in these areas is changing - or should change - in response to the influence of Postmodern ideas from cultural theory.

Abstract

Following the end of World War II, the primary tasks for many countries were land clearance, reformation, and reconstruction, as well as the reestablishment of functioning infrastructures. These social and environmental concerns, with parallel developments in the fine arts, fostered many of the century's most consequential developments in landscape design and architecture, and set the course that we still follow to a large degree today. With over two hundred illustrations in ten essays by noted historians and theorists from around the world, The Architecture of Landscape, 1940-1960 offers a comprehensive analysis of landscape architecture during an epoch when geographic limits became less important than a sense of world development and an international community of values and design ideas. In this sense, it is a landmark publication. Contributors: Thorbjörn Andersson, Malene Hauxner, Alan Powers, Dorothée Imbert, Gert Gröning, Catherine Howett, Dianne Harris, Rossana Vaccarino, and Philip Goad.

Abstract

The spatial and temporal dimensions of ecological phenomena have always been inherent in the conceptual framework of ecology, but only recently have they been incorporated explicitly into ecological theory, sampling design, experimental design and models. Statistical techniques for spatial analysis of ecological data are burgeoning and many ecologists are unfamiliar with what is available and how the techniques should be used correctly. This book gives an overview of the wide range of spatial statistics available to analyse ecological data, and provides advice and guidance for graduate students and practising researchers who are either about to embark on spatial analysis in ecological studies or who have started but are unsure how to proceed. Only a basic understanding of statistics is assumed and many schematic illustrations are given to complement or replace mathematical technicalities, making the book accessible to ecologists wishing to enter this important and fast-growing field for the first time.

Abstract

Although modernity’s understanding of nature and culture has now been superseded by that of environmentalism, the power to define the meaning of both, and hence the meaning of the world itself, remains in the same (Western) hands. This bold argument is at the center of this provocative book that challenges the widespread assumption that environmentalism reflects a radical departure from modernity. Our perception of nature may have changed, the author maintains, but environmentalism remains a thoroughly modernist project. It reproduces the cultural logic of modernity, a logic that finds meaning in unity and therefore strives to efface difference, and to reconfirm the position of the West as the source of all legitimate signification.

Abstract

First built in Europe and grandly imported to the United States in the mid-nineteenth century, the classical boulevard has been in decline for many years, victim of a narrowly focused approach to street design that views unencumbered vehicular traffic flow as the highest priority. The american preoccupation with destination and speed has made multiway boulevards increasingly rare as artifacts of the urban landscape. This book reintroduces the boulevard, tree-lined and with separate realms for through traffic and for slow-paced vehicular-pedestrian movement, as an important and often crucial feature of both historic and contemporary cities. It presents more than fifty boulevards - as varied as Avenue Montaigne, in Paris ; C.G.Road, in Ahmedabad, India ; and The Esplanade, in Chico, California - celebrating their usefulness and beauty. It discusses their history and evolution, the misconceptions that led to their near-demise in the United States, and their potential as a modern street type.
